Clifton Carpenter Ants

Clifton Virginia is located in the SW portion of NOVA.  It is a very small town, with a population of just 282 residents.  While the town is small, there are some big pest problems found in the area.

Carpenter Ants

One of the most common types of ants in Clifton is the Carpenter Ant. They are most likely found in areas with dead wood, such as logs and trees, but they can be found in houses as well. Carpenter Ants are mostly black in color and range in size from ¼ inch to ½ inch.   The queen ant can be up to ¾ inch in size.

Carpenter Ants live in colonies. In the spring, males and females will mate and the males will die. The females lose their wings and look to be the queen of a new colony. She does this by finding a good place to lay up to 20 eggs. As previously noted, she will look for a site that has moist dead wood.

Although, carpenter ants are drawn to moist, dead wood, they do not eat it. They dig out holes to store their eggs, larvae and pupae. Carpenter Ants eat honeydew, which is a secretion from insects. They also feed on nectar from flowers, fruit juice and sometimes dead carpenter ants from their colony.
